Regional Film Songs – National award winners

by sakshatkara

These are memorable songs from Tamil, Telugu & Kannada, which have won National award. It is just a pity that these songs do not get noticed as much as BW songs.

Let me begin with “Naadamaya” from Jeevan Chaitra by Late Legendary Kannada Superstar Dr Rajkumar. He was a true superstar who was blessed with a beautiful voice along with unmatched acting talents. He sung most of his songs(for movies). Visuals are not great in the song, just listen to the singing even if you do not understand the lyrics.

This Song won the National award in 1993.

Now that i have got my ‘favorite’ out of the way, i will list rest of them in chronological order (years missing indicates non regional movie song won the award).

2005

A touching song that fetched Chithra a national award is “Ovvoru Pookalume” from Autograph(Tamil).  Read interesting info about song’s raaga and composition here.

2002

Sadhana Sargam won National award for “Pattu Solli’ from Azhagi (Tamil).  Illayaraja composed the song, with lyrics by Pazhanibarathy.

2001

Shankar Mahadevan won Silver Lotus award for “Yenna Solla Pogirai” from Kandukondain Kandukondain . The song was composed A.R. Rahman and lyrics are by Variamuthu.

In the same year Bhavatharini won the award for Best Female Playback singer for “Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu” from Bharathi. Illaayaraja is the composer of the song.

1997

Legendary S.P Balasubramaniam won his 6th National award for “Thanga Tharmarai” from Minsara Kanavu (Tamil) . ARR has composed the song, and won thte national award for Best Music director for the second time.

K.S. Chitra won Nationa award for the sixth time for “Ooh La La La” from the same movie  Minsaara Kanavu.  Chitra has won 7 NATIONAL AWARDS as a singer.  This is the highest number of National awards won by ANY female playback singer.

1995

Swarnalatha won National award for her playback singing in ” Poorale Ponnuthayi” from Tamil movie “Karuththamma”. The song is composed by ARR with lyrics by Vairamuthu.

Unnikrishnan for “‘Ennavale” from Kadhalan . Once again ARR was the composer and lyrics were by Vairamuthu.

1993

S. Janaki won the Silver Lotus award for “Inji Iduppazhagi” from Thevar Magan (Tamil). Illayaraja is the composer of this melody. This movie was remade in Hindi as Virsaat.

1992

Vani Jayaram won the National award for the third time for “Aanati Neeyaraa” from Swathi Kiranam(Telugu). KV Mahadevan has composed the song.

1989

S. P. Balasubramaniam won the award for “Cheppaalani Undi” from Telugu movie Rudra Veena.

1983

Another gem from SPB which the won national award  is “Vedam Anuvanuvuna Nadham” from Sagara Sangamam (Telugu). Illayaraja composed the song. IMO in this movie Kamal Hasan gave a memorable performance. I would recommend this movie to all who have not watched it, yet.

  1. Hey Saks – thanks so much for posting these, and the update. I was slowly going through them. The firts one is simply divine – no pun intended. In the Minsara song Kajol is divine, song is wonderful – but that male lead is the most wooden actor I saw. The song from Sagar Sangamam is great too, as are the Azhagi and KK ones. I wish there were subtitles! Hope you keep the post alive so I can come back and listen once in a while. Question for you – Nandita Das or Kajol?

  2. Great post. The best of them all was the Sagara Sangamam one IMO. I seriously had tears in my eyes watching that song. I have the film with me. Will try watching the movie soon.

Thank you Saks for making such a wonderful list. :)

    • Thanks Virtuallyreel ! Kamal was at his BEST in Sagara Sangamam. Do watch it. I have at least watched it a minimum of 5 times. :-)

I need to add few more songs to the list. so do check back !

      • “I need to add few more songs to the list. so do check back !”

Obviously. Mai cake khaane kahin bhi aa jata hun. :)

And will surely check out Sagara Sanagamam soon.

  3. I love that Oooo Lalala song. Isn’t Chitra Jagjit Singh’s’ wife?? Or she is some other Chitra??
Ovvoru Pookalume is also very good.

I haven’t listened tot he last two songs. Will check that out soon. :)

    Thanks Saks. :)

    • VR – K S Chitra is called the Nightingale of the South India. She is NOT the wife of Jagjit Singh. She has sung lots of ARR songs, in his early days.

Please check out her webpage here.

She is an awesome singer, and i really like her singing a lot !. :-)

  4. I really liked the Ooh La La song from Minsaara Kanavu, but how can the film, win two national awards in two years? I am confused.

    • I think the first one was for Best Singer Male and the second one was for Best Single Female. Even if this is not the case, there is nothing to be confused of. I realized this year, that the National Awards have over 500 award categories. Even people involved in films like Shakalaka Boom Boom must have thought they could win one.

    • It was a typo, pardesiji. Thanks for pointing it out. :-)

Cleaned up the post and added couple more. Looking forward to your feedback.

  5. I jut realized that a song has so many facets – lyrics, music, vocals, picturization. How many categories do they award in? And sometimes a song is just perfect in all categories, like Chaiyya Chaiyya, or Yenna Solla Pogirai.

  6. Pardesiji,

Yes, a song has many facets… and following are the categories related to a song which are awarded a “Rajat Kamal” (Silver Lotus award) :

    1. Best Male Playback Singer
    2. Best Female Playback Singer
    3. Best Lyrics
    4. Best Choreography
    5. Best Audiography

Best Music direction is awarded based on the overall score of the movie including all the songs.

  7. Thanks! I wonder what the best choreography list is, but I will try and look it up for myself!

  8. thank you very much for the post

  9. To those who have made this site :
